Astrophotography turns a few photons per minute from objects thousands of light-years away into detailed color images. It works by collecting light over many long exposures, removing the camera's noise and optical defects with calibration frames, averaging dozens or hundreds of frames together to raise signal above noise, and finally stretching the faint data so the human eye can see it.

This site teaches the full pipeline interactively.
